If there’s one thing that I still enjoy within the horror community, it’s a good found footage flick. Now, before you roll your eyes and scoff at the idea, how about this; a found footage, period piece that appears to nail the look/sound/feel of the time? The Devil’s Doorway is Aislinn Clarke’s feature film, directoral debut.
The Devil’s Doorway is a film set in 1960’s Ireland, about a Magdalene Laundry (i.e. asylum); an institution run by the Catholic church to house “fallen” women. The absolute first thing we see in this trailer, is period-accurate aspect ratio for the types of cameras that would have been used. Not only does the image match up to the time period, but the audio sounds to have been recorded in the 60’s as well. Overall, had I not known any better, I would have completely believed this film took place in, and was filmed back in the 60’s. Utilizing setting, cinematography, a heavy atmosphere, and some quick scares, The Devil’s Doorway incorporates many aspects of the horror genre. Catholocism and horror go hand-in-hand, and I can’t wait for this film to come out.
The Devil’s Doorway will be released July 13th by IFC Films.
