The Academy Concedes to Horror with ‘Shape of Water’ and ‘Get Out’ Oscar Nods

Oscar nominations were announced today and horror/sci-fi fans have every reason to be thrilled. The Shape of Water leads the pack with 13 nominations, while Get Out racked up 4. This is hardly surprising following Guillermo del Toro’s win for Best Director at the Golden Globes, as well as all of the hype both of the films have garnered since their respective releases.

While The Shape of Water pushes viewers out of the comfort zone with a creature-feature spin on a period drama, Get Out’s consistent praise from the industry is even more out of the box. Horror films rarely if ever are this highly regarded, but Peele’s impeccable interweaving of social commentary with terrifying encounters has propelled this genre piece into the spotlight.

With tough competition from critically acclaimed films like Call Me by Your Name and Lady Bird, as well as Golden Globe favorite, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, only time will tell who the Academy has chosen as their cinematic leaders for its 90th year of awards.

Below are the categories where The Shape of Water and Get Out have been nominated, as well as the competition they face.
