Step Up to ‘The Gallows’

“20 years after a horrific accident during a small town school play, students at the school resurrect the failed show in a misguided attempt to honor the anniversary of the tragedy – but soon discover that some things are better left alone.”

Although it’s still walking down the well worn, found footage path with which Blumhouse Productions is familiar, this glimpse does a great job avoiding trailer trope traps, while still delivering something unsettling. Definitely something fresh from two folks we know almost nothing about. One might be nervous of a major release by relatively unknown filmmakers, but I find comfort in what Jason Blum had to say about Travis Cluff & Chris Lofing during a panel at this year’s WonderCon. When talking about their film The Gallows, & found footage in general, he said, “scary movies feature people in jeopardy, and people in jeopardy don’t tend to hold their cameras,” but that Cluff & Lofing found a way to make it feel “organic”.

With a July 10th release date (right in the prime of summer date-horror season), & Warner Bro./New Line releasing, I think we might have something here.

I’ve got my eyes on The Gallows.
