In my social circle, I tend to be the descending voice. A real M. Night sympathiser, but look at this you guys!
“Things appear normal until two children discover that Nana and Papa (Deanna Dunagan and Peter McRobbie) are involved in something deeply disturbing after being left to stay at their Grandparent’s house while their mother is on vacation. They’re warned not to come out of their room past 9:30 at night, but when they do they realize that there’s something terribly wrong with their grandparents. After pleading online to Mom for rescue, they realize that they’re on their own against the seemingly insane elders.”
I really appreciate the roll out of this trailer. Knowing nothing more than M. was working on a dark/comedic thriller called the Visit, & never even seeing a production still, a pre-Unfriended me, looking up between (potentially) overhyped sequel trailers, saw this little gem. This film seems to have something thats been lacking in found footage for a while now. Characteristics that I’ve been seeing in the genre recently, with increasing success. A chilly sense of lighthearted, youthful wonder. Something I believe you can only get in kid fronted horror film like this. Theres just something about seeing Grandparents, traditionally the only people who kid-glove you more than your parents, “just cleaning” rifles, or aggressively scratching doors in the nude. I love shock, & despair as much as the next guy, but sometimes it’s alright to just have fun. I don’t care if it’s possession or ritual. I want a significant helping.
Days after it premiered in theaters, the trailer is available for all eyes connected to wi-fi. Such a great way to start buzz & gauge interest. I would go to the theater over waiting for VOD a lot more often if I got the opportunity to see peaks like these before anyone else. Honestly, anything is better than having to sit through that Ted 2 trailer.
In conclusion, & I know I’m mostly alone in this sentiment, but I believe in you Mr. Shyamalan.
The Happening is a good movie.
I’m sorry.
