Mickey (Bill Skarsgård, IT) and Jules (Maika Monroe, It Follows) are lovers on the run, headed southbound for a fresh start in the Sunshine State. When their car dies after a gas station robbery, they break into a nearby house looking for a new set of wheels. What they find instead is a dark secret and a sweet-as-pie pair of homeowners who will do anything to keep it from getting out.
Suburban secrets are always the darkest. The assumed innocence of a seemingly put together homeowner is such a fun trope to twist if done right. And with a cast like this, and the great reception it had when screening at SXSW 2019, I’m not going to lie. I’m thrilled.
I mean Bill Skarsgård? Maika Monroe? Jeffrey Donovan? Kyra Sedgwick? The cast’s genre competence, paired with what appears to be the most batty premise since Mom and Dad, Villains theatrical release on September 20th couldn’t come fast enough.
