New Yorker Anna has just suffered the sudden and unexpected death of her best friend and roommate, Izzy. She’s trying to handle this loss when Izzy’s cat, Booger, runs away. Anna goes on a desperate search to find him and in the process, she is bitten on the hand by the cat. She soon begins to take on feline characteristics, and her work life and relationship with her boyfriend start to go downhill.
Dark Sky Films delivered the goods with The House of the Devil, Stake Land, and Deathgasm, but can they do it again? My hopes are high after seeing the familiar face of indie darling Heather Matarazzo (Welcome to the Dollhouse, Hostel, Scream).
Anna, played by Grace Glowicki (TITO), wanders into Ellen’s pet store, played by Matarazzo, in search of a cat she lost named Booger. Anna squirms uncomfortably in Ellen’s suffocating bear hug after she finds out that Booger was orphaned by Anna’s recently unalived friend. I’m unsure of whether or not the awkward embrace is for the dead friend or the cat.
After a few fleeting glimpses of Garrick Bernard (Single Drunk Female), the trailer dives right into what we’re all here for — the gross shit. Anna scarfs down fistfuls of wet, congealed cat food, making sure to get it all over her face, too. A thick and jiggly string of spit forms a bridge between her teeth and her tongue before she licks and snarls her way through whatever is left on the plate.
Then she grows fangs, pulls some of her own hair out of her mouth, coughs up someone else’s hair, does some light purring, and rides a dude while aggressively licking his face. You know what, I’m calling it; I’m pretty sure Anna’s being possessed by a cat named Booger. Let’s find out together, shall we!?
Booger opens in select theaters and arrives on VOD on Friday, September 13.
