Makani Young has moved from Hawaii to quiet, small-town Nebraska to live with her grandmother and finish high school, but as the countdown to graduation begins, her classmates are stalked by a killer intent on exposing their darkest secrets to the entire town, terrorizing victims while wearing a life-like mask of their own face. Referential, yet not quite meta, Patrick Brice has refreshed the subgenre in a way I haven’t seen since Tyler MacIntyre’s Tragedy Girls. But of course he couldn’t have done it without the source material. There’s Someone Inside Your House is based on Stephanie Perkins’ New York Times best-selling novel of the same name. No, I haven’t read it. What do you think I’m made of, clocks? …by all accounts it’s a good book. Apologies, Steph. I promise I’ll get to it eventually. The script was written by Henry Gayden. Best known for his short series, Zombie Roadkill, Shazam!, and its upcoming sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
Although some may have considered Patrick’s last film, Corporate Animals, a bit of a misstep. I find his charm and pinch of absurdity incredibly refreshing. From the iconic Aaron character from Creep, his many standout episodes in the motel room anthology series Room 104 (RIP), to an awful office team-building trip…I’m about as bias as it can get. It’s all thumbs up over here. However, There’s Someone Inside Your House might just be the teen slasher to push Patrick into the world of more mainstream, seat-filling horror. I can’t think of a guy who deserves it more.
