Cult Copycat Slaying or Cold Blooded Familicide in FX & Blumhouse’s ‘The Wilderness of Error’

From Emmy Award-winning producer Marc Smerling and Emmy Award-winning executive producer Jason Blum (that’s a lot of Emmys…), producers of the groundbreaking and award-winning series The Jinx, comes a five-part documentary series, A Wilderness of Error, based on the best-selling book by Errol Morris who also appears in the series.

When Army surgeon Jeffrey MacDonald is sent to prison for killing his family, a storm of swirling narratives challenges our very ability to find the truth all the while overshadowing a chilling possibility: MacDonald may be an innocent man.

In addition, Marc Smerling in partnership with Sony Music Entertainment will be launching a companion podcast, Morally (In)Defensible, which follows the story of journalist Joe McGinniss in the writing of his smash best seller Fatal Vision, also about the MacDonald murders, prior to the airing of the docuseries. A Wilderness of Error isn’t FX’s first foray in true crime. It follows the success of the four-part, Zodiac killer focused, The Most Dangerous Animal of All (also based on a book of the same name).

The drone footage of a forest may not help set this series apart from the slog of true crime content being dropped at the foot of our recliners, but the source material and experience Blumhouse brings to the table has be intrigued. They’ve consistently displayed their ability to tell a slick story, while making the best of their budget. I don’t know about you, but I’ll be watching.

The Wilderness of Error premieres Friday, September 25th at 8PM ET/PT on FX, airing the first three episodes back-to-back-to-back. The final two episode will air the following week.
