From the same studio that brought you films such as the jump-inducing Paranormal Activity to the newest M. Night blockbuster The Visit, Blumhouse Productions has announced a new installment to the genre, written and directed by Jordan Peele.
If that name sounds familiar, yet perhaps somewhat out of place, then you and I are in the same boat. Jordan is well-known for being one half of the comedic duo Key & Peele, formerly of Comedy Central.
The horror-thriller Get Out, will, in Peele’s words “take on the task of exploring race in America…Like comedy, horror has an ability to provoke thought and further the conversation on real social issues in a very powerful way.” Something that he pointed out, “hasn’t really been done within the genre since Night of the Living Dead 47 years ago.” The film will focus on a young African-American man visiting his Caucasian girlfriend’s family estate.
This is a very different kind of project for Peele, but will allow him to focus on his first love, writing and directing. Personally, I’m very interested to see Peele’s transition. His fresh take on the genre as well as a not-often-explored premise should make for a compelling horror experience.
