Alright, ‘Halloween’…I Believe in the Boogeyman

A British documentary crew comes to the States to visit Michael in prison for a retrospective of the maniac’s night of terror — but their project becomes way more interesting when Myers escapes custody, retrieves his signature mask and seeks revenge on Laurie, with others naturally being part of his impressive career body count along the way.

In the decades following the fateful Halloween night that forever altered the former babysitter’s life, Laurie has armed and prepped herself for Michael’s inevitable return — to the detriment of her family, including daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak).

Following the less that universal satisfaction with the Rob Zombie reboot (I didn’t hate it…), for director David Gordon Green (Prince Avalanche, Joe, Pineapple Express), and writer Danny McBride (Alien Covenant, This is the End, Hell & Back), the pressure had to be palpable. Lucky for them, the atmosphere displayed in this trailer was as well. It’s apparent that the love they brought to the project, resulted in at least a two minutes, forty-five seconds of footage that has me entirely convinced their capable hands pulled it off. (Apologies for my excessive excitement. I’m only human).

Being brought into this chapter with the help of a documentary crew is such a smart move. Leaning into America’s current obsession with true crime. And Laurie Stroud (Jamie Lee Curtis) becoming a trained killer with an almost Bruce Wayne/Batman secret basement is…interesting. There’s always the possibility of these moments feeling a little silly, but the classic energy still lays over the screen like a familiar blanket, allowing me to overlook this…for now.

An aged mask, scattered teeth, & the wandering insane?

We’ll see what the rest looks like on screen when Michael comes home on October 19, 2018.
