Abbie’s Top 13 Horror Films of 2018

True to my strange tastes, I have created a Top 13 of 2018 List that’s full of films with peculiar imagery, cults, gore, witches… and more cults.

13. Mom and Dad

This dark horror comedy features Selma Blair and Nic Cage as parents — I know — who suddenly desire to kill their children. The film is equal parts disturbing and hilarious.

12. You Might be the Killer

This horror comedy is smart, bloody, and full of horror movie in-jokes that genre fans will love knowing.

11. Terrifier

Art the Clown is the supervillain we need right now. His maliciousness and dark sense of humor know no bounds.

10. Cargo

If you don’t mind your heartstrings getting pulled purposefully, then Cargo is the plague-zombie film for you. It expertly shows how families—no matter how different they are—can come together and find “home” during the apocalypse.

9. The Endless

This science fiction movie masterfully weaves different tales into each other with ease. It’s heartwarming, startling, and mesmerizing to watch.

8. The Ritual

This film merely drives home the point that men should never have a lost weekend in the woods to reconnect after a tragic event. You never know who—or what—you could stumble into that could change your life.

7. Apostle

This film starts innocently enough, but once its protagonist arrives at a religious community that seems more like a blood cult, things get real crazy fast. Naturally, bloodletting, sword fights, and epic torture ensue.

6. November

This black and white fairy tale is incredibly strange. It features mythical creatures, tragic love, and woodsy witchcraft.

5. Suspiria (2018)

The Suspiria remake is an excellent companion to its predecessor. Each film is unique and has an intoxicating mood all its own. Also: we finally get to see the witches at work.

4. The Witch in the Window

Although this film is more about failure and dread than horror, its story, which concerns a father and son, is unforgettably haunting.

3. Annihilation

Annihilation tells a unique story about life, death, and transformation. The film also is as beautiful as it is gruesome — I mean, come on — that bear.

2. Hereditary

I’m a sucker for family dramas and all-things occult, so, it’s only natural that Hereditary earned a spot on my list. Also, the film looks fantastic, and there’s Toni Collette; that’s a winning combination.

1. Mandy

Mandy is just one of those movies that’s “made for me.” The film is gorgeous and features bizarre characters who make your skin crawl. Then there’s that uncomfortably long seen that features Nic Cage guzzling a bottle of vodka in his underwear.
