A Familiar Story Spills Out in a Shocking way in ‘A Nightmare Wakes’

While composing her famous novel Frankenstein, Mary Shelley (Alix Wilton ReganThe Wife) descends into an opium-fueled fever dream while carrying on a torrid love affair with Percy Shelley (Giullian Yao GioielloScream: The TV Series, Marvel’s Iron Fist). As she writes, the characters of her novel come to life and begin to plague the relationships with those closest to her as the shadow of her monster threatens to overcome her.

On the heels of Emma Jensen’s Elle Fanning helmed, Mary Shelly from 2017, this much more psychological take appears to follow history, but with a modern twist. Not exactly Romeo + Juliet, but nonetheless. It’s not often we get to see the madness behind classic works, and it’s exactly that balance that I’m concerned with. Personal torment taken more figuratively while maintaining historical accuracy.

A Nightmare Wakes will be available on Shudder starting February 4th, 2021.
