Uncanny‘s flatness verges on off-putting at times, but the cold presence of an isolated scientist, & the worlds first “perfect”, yet socially awkward artificialy intelligent being, amplifies the charm of Lucy Griffith (Last Summer, True Blood), who’s shoulders bear the entire emotional load. Gliding cinematography, creaking seclusion, & the unrelenting cold tone gracefully ramp up tension, leaving the audience unaware of their labored breathing until the films resolution. While existing in a post Ex Machina world may be difficult, Uncanny manages to peek from behind its shadow. If there’s anything I’ve learned this year, it’s never ever break a robot’s heart.
