Umma is a dark movie; and by that I don’t mean thematically. Due to a traumatic experience as a child, Amanda has chosen to live her life without any electricity. This sets up for a very spooky half ghost story/half family drama focusing heavily on the use of light, shadows, darkness, & background. The film (very loosely) talks about the hardships of first generation immigrants, as well as escaping abusive patterns within a family. It’s a tense thriller that has some genuine scares and a super small scale mostly focusing on a mother and daughter. Some great visuals & sound design really keeps you engaged and ultimately ends up being an enjoyable little flick.

Visuals lurking in the background and shadows.
Very tense and moody.
A bit one-note.
Horror heavy beginning that mellows out into family drama.
