Jung-Seok lives disgraced in Hong Kong after South Korea became overrun with zombies four years ago. He lost everything, but his luck changes when he’s approached by gangsters to retrieve a truck full of money in return for a fortune if he survives. Peninsula shares no characters or stories with any of the other films in the series, but does share an emotional center. Jung-Seok’s guilt eats at him and he seeks to atone for past mistakes. The relationships keep the story grounded and relatable. However, the rest is mostly action with a dash of horror. A child driving Fast & Furious style seems out of place, cartoonish, and takes away from the story. The social critique, which is deeply ingrained in the rest of the series, is also glaringly absent. Peninsula is worth a watch, but I expected more.
Train to Busan Presents: PENINSULA debuts on 4K & Blu-ray November 24th.
