More drama than horror, The Swerve brings about the need for a new genre label: depression-porn. Similar to listening to sad music when feeling sad, this film provides a level of relatability that you as the viewer are not alone in your existential dread (or it might, if you’re slightly less stable, send you further down the path of desperation). Azura Skye’s portrayal of Holly, a mother/wife/teacher whose unreliable memory and erratic behavior renders her a sort of antihero, is raw & emotionally-distressing. Her character’s discontentedness is only exacerbated by her continual undesirable decision making (as stated before: relatable but unpleasant). While the film is well made in every aspect, it is not one I intend to revisit. Recommended viewing if you are feeling of sound mind.
The Swerve premiered at Cinepocalypse 2019.
