When I discovered the team behind They Look Like People had made a film about a siren, I had to wonder if the universe was saying, “Felicia, this is for you.” This folksy, melancholic, ultimately doomed romance explores themes of love and loss while delivering a tense thriller worth diving into. It was a pleasant surprise to find that not only was writer/director Perry Blackshear behind both films, but the whole cast had carried over as well, which did wonders for the onscreen chemistry and made character interactions feel organic and genuine. While the pacing was a bit slow and the overall film lighter on horror than I would have liked, The Siren is a beautifully scored, visually stunning, and perfectly cast addition to Blackshear’s repertoire. I can’t wait to see what this crew does next.
