What emerges when you mix a scary story, a remote location, an iconic actor’s grin, and one of the best directors of all time? The Shining: a horror movie of virtually unparalleled quality and timeless scare power. Jack Torrance, his wife Wendy, and their son Danny move into a massive mountain resort to care for it over the winter months that it closes to guests. What follows is far more than a standard cabin fever story – we have ghosts, telepathy, axes, blood, mazes, and a fear so primal that I always experience a sleepless night after watching this movie – even after dozens of viewings. The film is not without its critics – including the author of the story on which it is based. That said, if you have even a passing interest in horror, this is a movie you cannot miss, nor can you see it too many times.
