It’s just a jump to the left. Literally. Fox’s remake of the campy cult classic is definitely The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but it’s a bit off. Things open promisingly with a nod to the stage production as Ivy Levan belts out “Science Fiction/Double Feature” as the usherette, but what follows is a back and forth of hits and misses. Performances range from good to wood to finely tuned mimics of the original. The music is updated and well executed, but not too rock and roll. The sets and costumes are just on the other side of the “too elaborate” fence. And while what little plot exists is maintained, the message is lost in the primetime friendly edits. It just lacks the sexual and cultural defiance that so defined the original. It’s entertaining, but time is better spent watching the 1975 version.
