The Frighteners is the kind of freaky-fun flick that gets young people into horror movies. Although the film’s liberal use of CGI doesn’t stand the test of time (and how could it; The Frighteners came out in 1996 and was one of the first movies to really use the technology), its tight storyline, jokes, and adventure-like feel keep it light and fresh. This is most likely because it was directed by Peter Jackson; Jackson also helped write the film’s script. Although the movie is somewhat kid-friendly, it has some truly mean scenes. The hospital sequence is still chilling. Lookout for noteworthy performances from Michael J. Fox, Jeffrey Combs, and Dee Wallace.
