Somewhere between Let the Right One In, a zombie movie, and an episode of ‘SVU’ exists The Dark. Tobey Nichols plays an abducted boy who makes friends with a monster (played by Nadia Alexander) that resides in a dilapidated house in woods. Tackling topics like child abuse with attention & care, the films two young stars give performances beyond their years. Well orchestrated uses of silence and playing with dynamics in the sound design creates a bigger payoff for the ax & knife swings. The ending is the highlight, neatly buttoning up a heartfelt story; this movie is for fans of genre-defying works who enjoy their gore balanced with compassion and friendship.
