Cannibal Club wants to be a biting social commentary about the upper echelon of social elite. When the film focuses on the inner workings of the club, whether it’s scandalous toolshed trysts at prestigious parties or grotesque dinner shows, it drives this theme home quite effectively. Unfortunately, we get very little of this between snippets of Gilda and Otavio’s dysfunctional relationship. The satire aspect gets muddied when the film can’t quite decide if it wants the audience to condemn or sympathize with its protagonists. Nit-picking aside, this twisted, bloody tableau of life inside a dangerously taboo society makes for one squirm-inducing watch. The tension will churn your stomach more than a clubhouse buffet. A brutal and abrupt ending wraps the film perfectly.
