A 666-Character Review of ‘Summer of ’84’

When Davey tells his friends that he believes the police officer living down the street may be a serial killer, the group sets out to investigate. It’s as simple a premise as it is an intriguing one. The pace of the mystery inspires a regular back-and-forth of confidence and doubt, which—in turn—lends a certain anxiety to the viewing experience. It’s very effective, and when combined with superbly 80s costumes and sets it makes Summer of ‘84 the gem that is. It positively beams with the adolescent tones of yesteryear mixed with a gritted nostalgia, ultimately lying somewhere between Super Dark Times and Stranger Things. The script is tightly crafted, brought to life by strong directing and great performances. It should be a sufficient scratch for anyone’s itch for a throwback thriller.
