Adam Egypt Mortimer’s Some Kind of Hate is a neo-slasher in two distinct parts. The first act is a brooding Van Sant-esque meditation on teen bullying. Lincoln Taggert (Ronen Rubinstein), a looming onscreen presence described by director Mortimer as that of “a young Glenn Danzig,” absorbs physical and psychological abuse at home and school with a seething restraint. When Lincoln lands in a reform camp, the bullying only intensifies, and the film undergoes a shift in tone that can most accurately be called “bonkers”. The vengeful spirit of another bullied teenager rises to Lincoln’s aid, and the ensuing bloody melee is light years from where the film began.
