Red and black, valentines and coal, candy boxes and human hearts. My Bloody Valentine is a delightfully dissonant display, merging coal mining and Valentine’s Day into a fantastic slasher. For the first time in 20 years, Valentines Bluff is celebrating their namesake holiday, sure that the killer (who warned them not to) must be gone. As festivities get underway it becomes clear they were mistake. The aesthetics and tone of the film are impressively consistent and the setting is equally distinct. That’s ultimately what works here, the movie sets itself apart by being such an odd idea to begin with. So while the performances aren’t the best and the feeling is occasionally camp, the experience itself is still lots of fun. As far as holiday horror goes, My Bloody Valentine is one of the best.
