After seeing Midsommer for the third time (yes, I’m that person), I can confidently report that Ari Aster’s directors cut of the nauseatingly beautiful film is the version to see. The three-hour-long deep-dive into the traditions and inner-workings of Harga—a small, mythical Swedish commune—adds to the film’s plot, which focuses on relationships, loss, and family. The added scenes also give the audience further insight into the film’s main characters. And although viewers really didn’t need additional reasons to dislike Dani’s emotionally manipulative boyfriend, the director’s cut version gives the audience plenty excuses to root for his inevitable demise.
