A 666-Character Review of ‘House of 1000 Corpses’

Release Date
April 11, 2003
DIRECTOR
Rob Zombie

A group of teenagers looking for little known attractions encounter a twisted, murderous family. House of 1000 Corpses is way better than I remember. The visuals are impressive with a mixture of conventional narrative filming and raw or distorted scenes. The cutaway scenes capture the era and act as a raw look into the family’s world. Zombie’s love of true crime, horror, and 70’s sleaze comes across and makes the film memorable despite its flaws. The plot takes inspiration from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and infuses the family with a Manson-like cult feeling. Moseley is completely unhinged yet steeped in his own brand of logic and Haig’s Captain Spaulding is fun and likeable despite being so sinister. I’m so glad I gave this another chance and I’d like to revisit The Devil’s Rejects too.
