Hatching is a monster flick first and a family drama second and balances both so well that it’s easy to overlook the outlandish horror storyline. Hatching is a relatable coming of age story of a teenage girl, Tinja, who discovers her family is not as perfect as it appears to be. When she discovers a strange egg in the forest, she tucks it away to care for it, not knowing what horror lives inside.
The film is full of suspense but does a great job of telling a real story with real character development. The creature design isgoofy at first, and some may argue that the film would have benefitted from leveraging on suspense but I disagree. The reveal of Alli at the start pays dividends later as we watch her revolting transformation. It felt long at times, but in the end I’d still put all my eggs in Hatching.
Hatching will be available in theaters April 29th, & on VOD May 17th.
