Followers has a timely, relevant plot: two filmmakers stalk two Youtube stars based on the information they publicly display on the internet with the intent of getting them to think twice about what they share. Unfortunately, the execution of this story falls flat which can mainly be attributed to a poorly written script. Every found footage cliche and trope made it into the final cut (one partner trying to film sex while the other refuses, drone footage, exclamations of “what’s that?” followed by shaky camera shots). The plot twist was enjoyable but somehow both heavy handed and half cooked. With a few more rewrites, the film could have been more effective.
