Demon is an possession flick that gives you a look into another culture. Taking place over the course of a Jewish-Polish wedding, groom Piotr’s body is inhabited by a dybbuk (a malevolent soul of a once-living human being). Bride Zaneta and her family work with a priest, doctor and professor to determine the best method of exorcism. Like many other Eastern European movies, the ending does not provide a bang of resolution but rather a vague closing with many questions still unanswered. The film’s beautiful cinematography combined with its subtle scares, dark comedic moments and Slavic folklore set it apart from many other recent releases in the same subgenre.
