If you like piña coladas, and gettin’ caught in the rain, you might just be Mary Dauterman, writer and director of Booger. This horror comedy takes a whimsical premise and, oddly enough, doesn’t run with it. The subject of body horror sets expectations high for amusement, gore, and absurdity. Booger, instead, attempts to package a slow-burn emotional drama with heavy exposition in an ill-fitting package, relying on few repeated gross-outs to keep within genre specs. I wanted to love this film, and the smooth, organic cinematography paired with an endearing performance from our lead actress Grace Glowicki took me half-way. A convoluted timeline, unresolved threads, and baffling lack of commitment to the concept took me out. Booger the cat was a joy. Booger the film failed to deliver.

Pos
Film-style felt natural and realistic without leaning either too home-movie or way overproduced.
Genuinely hooked at the start by the overall, fun and unique concept supported by strong performances, and was on board for a slow-burn.
THE CAT LIVES.
Neg
Writing felt very noncommittal to the initial premise, and did not deliver the ultimate transformation implied by the subject matter.
Unnecessary exposition: The flashbacks are repetitive and fail to convey new information.
Hits you over the head with metaphor.
