1974’s Beyond the Door is a demonic possession film inspired by Rosemary’s Baby while also being accused of borrowing heavily from the previous year’s The Exorcist. Jessica Barrett is pregnant with her third child, and unbeknownst to her, it is the cause of The Devil’s toying. Only Dimitri, Jessica’s old boyfriend from years back, can help when it is revealed that she is indeed being controlled by Satan. In all fairness, there are similarities to the aforementioned films, but this slow-burn has a few tension-filled moments that set it apart as well. As Jessica falls deeper into possession, her scenes do hold most of what they set out to do…frighten and impact the viewer. This is not a must-watch for all, but fans of possession driven plots might find this an interesting watch if not a gem.

POS
Effective possession scenes that ratchet up the tension
Juliet Mills (Jessica) is great as she dives deeper into Satan’s grasp
Gail, Jessica’s oldest child, is a firecracker
NEG
Almost comical dubbing...it was hard to stick it out
Very 70s’ musical montages throughout. With the exception of a nose flute...that’s right….a grown man playing a flute with his nose.
It’s dated, but part of the charm too I guess.
