Betrothed is the latest in a never ending line of Chainsaw Massacre inspired backwoods horror films. These movies generally try – and fail – to capture the same sleazy spirit and intense nature of Chainsaw, and Betrothed is one of the failures. This is the most sanitized, limp take on the killer redneck genre I’ve seen in some time, and I hate to say that because the concept of forced marriage into a hillbilly murder family sounds awesome. But what we get out of this concept is flat acting, bad effects, and bland characters. If you can’t depict rape and torture in a way that incites discomfort in your viewer you probably shouldn’t bother depicting it at all.
