A recently-deceased young couple portrayed by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis seek the help of a devious spirit in order to exorcise the living from their former home in Tim Burton’s 1988 classic Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! In true Burton fashion, the Beetlejuice filmscape is somewhere between fantasy and nightmare. With effects ranging from stop-motion to puppetry, the visuals in this film are a kaleidoscope of spooky colors, patterns, and textures. Michael Keaton is devilishly disgusting alongside melodramatic young goth Winona Ryder. With the help of a hardy dose of nostalgia, this film holds up well despite bizarre themes and it’s obvious 80’s aesthetic. The purposefully B-movie style in which it was produced makes this film timeless, and a seasonal must-watch.
