‘High Life’ Makes Deep Space Death Row Look More Bleak Than You’d Believe

Monte and his baby daughter are the last survivors of a damned and dangerous mission to deep space. The crew—death-row inmates led by a doctor with sinister motives—has vanished. As the mystery of what happened on board the ship is unraveled, father and daughter must rely on each other to survive as they hurtle toward the oblivion of a black hole.

High Life, the latest from A24 takes us to space, a setting seldom explored by the films under their umbrella. Parisian writer/director Claire Denis has joined forces with actors Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche (The English Patient), Andre Benjamin (aka Andre 3000), and Mia Goth (Suspiria [2018], A Cure for Wellness) to deliver what promises to be a visually stunning sci-fi thriller. Denis’ previous films have been highly lauded (this is her first English language film), but she’ll have to power through some overdone tropes to land a successful venture into sci-fi: a mad scientist, criminals who are likely the least morally corrupt characters, and a spacecraft that’s crew mysteriously disappeared.

High Life will hit theaters April 12.
