Goodnight Mommy will leave you with some deeply disturbing images as you contemplate your role as parent, son, or daughter. The story follows twin boys living in the Austrian countryside who begin to question whether the woman who returned home after reconstructive facial surgery is really their mother. Exquisite cinematography, wonderfully nuanced acting (by Susanne Wuest and newcomers Lucas and Elias Schwarz), and a compelling story (written and directed by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz) make this movie a brilliant cinematic experience. Though the first part of the film is quite understated, this quiet and thoughtful foundation creates the perfect mood for a third act that leaves even the most seasoned horror fans squeamishly perched on the edge of their seat. A must-see.
