This is the story of a family. One that although seen in a grueling, post-apocloyptic existence, are still hunting for normalcy. Following a more direct tragedy, we find ourselves witnessing grief from all sides that for a while overshadows a more tangible threat. With over 90% of this film in subtitled sign language, I found myself at the mercy of the sound design. Dynamics forced my limbs to my core more times than I’d like to admit. Emily Blunt’s strong performance got me through a very labor intensive scene. I won’t dare spoil the secret of what our ever-present threat is…but ILM came up with something truly complex & fresh, while not being alienating.
